Abstract: The protection of harbours using berm breakwaters is a rather novel concept. These rubble mound structures rely for their stability on the movement of its component particles when subject to wave attack. The profile therefore reforms into a more natural shape. As these structures are in their infancy, the design process for them is not well developed. This paper sets out to review the presenat design methods for rubble mound structures and show how they relate to berm breakwaters. Details of model tests currently being undertaken are presented and preliminary results discussed.
