Abstract: The hydromechanical processes which are involved in the energy transfer aroundstructures and the energy dissipation by internal and external friction willbe explained and demonstrated by fluid visualization experiments.Thesemisubmerged vertical wall and the rigid horizontal submerged plate areexamined. The flow around both types of structures is governed bynonstationary oscillations creating significant, large eddies. The basicconcept of the orbital wave theory can no longer be applied to these motions.Near the structures a considerable large amount of wave energy is periodicallytransferred to these eddies, which leads to a significant energy dissipation.
