Abstract: A transient, lateral avera ged two-dimensional strati fied lake circulation model with free surface and bathymetric variation is formulated. The model was tested for several hypothetical lake dynamics cases, and finally applied to a real man-made lake with accelerated wind and heat loading. The salient features of the establishment of multiple-gyre circulation and the formation and erosion of thermocline in the epilimnion and hypo limnion of the lake are well predicted. In the meantime, the free surface fluctuations of lake level are also simulated.
