Abstract: A newly discovered special stratification effect caused supersaturation of waters with carbon dioxide near the surface layer in Lake N yos. Strong oscillations of the stratified waters induced by exsolving gas bubbles led to the disastrous gas burst, which released around 150-200 million m~3 of the toxic gas. This event demonstrated the need for preventive research on gassy lakes.
