Abstract: The powerful techniques of linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory can be applied in the design of closed-loop control systems for canals with a number of open channels in series. This technique considers the dynamics of the entire canal to determine the controls used at each of the gates. The approach provides for guaranteed stability of open channel flow control. An example is given to illustrate the use of the method.
