Abstract: Urban drainage network (UDN) is an underground municipal infrastructure for the purpose of transferring and transporting rainwater and sewage, and its inspection and maintenance are very difficult due to the complexity of the actual operation status. The traditional operation and maintenance of UDN mainly relies on regular on-site surveys or sewage and sediment picking to obtain operational data, which has a lag and does not reflect the hydraulic and water quality status in the network timely. With the development of Internet of Things technology (IoT), real-time monitoring through sensors can react to the operational status of the pipe network, which is very important for the safe and stable operation of the UDN. Due to the complex drainage pipe topology and numerous nodes, the application of IoT sensors, especially the selection of the number and location of monitoring points, is very difficult. This paper summarizes the latest research progress of the optimal arrangement method of IoT sensors in UDN, summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of different optimal arrangement methods and theories and their scope of application, and at the same time refers to the optimal arrangement of sensors in other water conservancy projects of the same type, in order to provide more scientific references and suggestions for the monitoring of the UDN.
