Abstract: The spatio-temporal dynamics of bedload, the dominant mode of sediment transport in gravel-bed rivers, are highly variable and fluctuate due to the complex interactions among flow hydraulics, channel morphology, and sediment supply. This study examines the spatial and temporal variations in bedload flux along a 1.3 km reach of the Satsunai River, a gravel-bed river, using advanced 2D numerical modeling that accounts for non-uniform sediment distributions. The sensitivity of sediment flux patterns to various sediment supply scenarios during a flushing flow is explored. Additionally, some of the key driving mechanisms for flux variations are discussed. The results reveal complex spatio-temporal patterns of sediment flux, highlighting significant variability across different sections of the reach. These findings emphasize the importance of numerical modeling to deepen our understanding of sediment transport processes in gravel-bed rivers in a field-scale and to inform more effective river management and restoration strategies.
