Abstract: This paper describes the results of overflow resistance of gabions constructed on the back slopes of levees. We conducted a full-scale levee experiment in a large-scale outdoor channel under flow conditions of 30 cm overflow depth and 3 h overflow time. The experimental results demonstrated that the voids between the filled stones in the gabion could reduce the velocity of the overflow water and prevent erosion of the levee. In conclusion, the installation of gabions on the back slope strengthens the overflow resistance of the levee.
