Abstract: In energy dissipation structures such as plunge pools, the flow is highly aerated. A thermodynamic analysis indicates that at full scale, up to 50% of the hydraulic energy can be dissipated by air compression. The analysis also shows that air content related energy dissipation is substantially smaller at model scale, which may explain scale effects in aerated flow problems.
