Abstract: Recent studies have shown significant warming of lakes throughout the world. To better understand the patterns and mechanisms of global lake warming we have compiled and analysed lake temperature data from numerous in-situ and satellite-based records. We investigate (i) how have lake temperatures responded to climate change since the start of the 20th century, (ii) how do lake temperature trends vary spatially within a lake and the implications of which for global lake temperature studies, and (iii) which lakes can be expected to display an amplified response to air temperature variability and thus can be considered extremely sensitive to climatic warming.
