Abstract:

The Murray–Darling Basin is Australia’s largest and most complex river system. Decades of unconstrained water use, persistent drought and climate variability demanded change to Basin water management and a coordinated, system-wide response. In 2012, the Murray–Darling Basin Plan was enacted to manage the river as an interconnected system, restoring ecological health while meeting diverse and often competing needs. Overseen by the Murray–Darling Basin Authority, the Basin Plan is recognised internationally as a world-leading water reform, noted for its scale, scientific approach and collaborative governance.
