Abstract: Combined Sewer Systems (CSS) are common urban sewer infrastructure designed to convey both household wastewater and urban stormwater runoff to treatment plants. However, during heavy rainfall events, the systems design capacity can be exceeded leading to the release of excess untreated wastewater into nearby water bodies in a process called Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO). Furthermore, in many CSS networks full or partial blockages, due to sediment, waste deposition or failures, may lead to increase in the frequency of untreated wastewater discharge even during dry periods.
