Trade-Off Analysis of Check Dam Configurations Using 2D Hydrodynamic Simulations Within an NbS Framework

Abstract: This work examines small check dams as Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for flood mitigation through a trade-off analysis based on two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Using the Rain-on-Grid (RoG) approach in HEC-RAS 2D, variations in the number and height of structures were assessed in relation to peak discharge, runoff volume and inundation extent. The scenarios revealed measurable but non-proportional responses to intervention magnitude, providing an initial view of the underlying trade-offs. These insights offer a first screening of the design space ahead of a dedicated optimisation phase for NbS implementation.
