Development of a Basin-Scale Digital Twin Platform for Integrated Water Resources Management

Abstract: This work presents the development of a digital twin platform designed to improve water-resources management in the Guadiana River Basin. The system integrates multiple data sources, including airborne LiDAR, bathymetric surveys, orthophotos, satellite imagery, in-situ sensors, and hydrometeorological networks. These datasets are processed through automated ETL workflows that extract, clean, and standardize information before storing it in a unified spatiotemporal model. On this data foundation, the platform incorporates hydrological simulations, water-quality indicators, and initial estimates of groundwater recharge. A service-based orchestration layer allows different models to be executed, combined, and compared under a variety of scenarios. The platform also includes a flexible 2D/3D visualization environment with GIS tools, point-cloud rendering when needed, and the ability to overlay orthophoto layers to support detailed spatial analysis. The first implementation demonstrates that the system can effectively merge diverse datasets, run continuously updated simulations, and support analyses related to floods, droughts, and storage dynamics.
