One of the main objectives of the IAHR/IWA Joint Committee on Marine Outfall Systems is to promote the science of outfall systems and effluent mixing processes. The objective of this short course is to present an introduction to the design and modelling methods and the latest selected research results related to outfall systems and the mixing of effluents in water bodies. It focuses on outfall systems and their effluent mixing from a hydraulic perspective. Topics include simulation of outfall systems for inclined dense jets, including inclined dense jets in cross flow and shallow water, introduction and advanced research results on numerical modelling of outfall systems, theory and integral Models of jets and plumes and ocean outfalls from laboratory modelling to interpretations in real-world situations.
