Abstract: The paper describes the results of an experimental investigation on effect of wall roughness on a debris flow. The consequences of the wall roughness on the motion is well known in the case of clear water or under ordinary sediment transport, while, in case of debris flow, many questions are still pending. A frequent situation is that in which a channel is designed to carry the liquid discharge, but also debris flow.It is generally assumed that a rough wall is unsuited to the case of debris flow. The design tendency is thus to have the channel walls smoothed as much as possible, with negative consequences in particular from an environmental point of view.
